The Frederick Banting Foundation has supported the following research initiatives.

Our transformation of day-to-day treatment portfolio includes the following:

  • University of Virginia, Boris Kovatchev (2011-2013)

  • We supported research on the Artificial Pancreas project led by the Center for Diabetes Technology (CDT) team and currently in clinical trials in the U.S. and Europe. The UVA team is led by Boris Kovatchev.
  • Boston University, Ed Damiano (2011-2013)

  • We supported research on the Bionic Pancreas, a dual hormone version of the Artificial Pancreas currently in clinical trials in the U.S.  The BU team is led by Ed Damiano.


    Our Practical Cure portfolio consists of the following projects:

  • Diabetes Research Institute, Camillo Ricordi (2012)

  • We supported beta cell regeneration and implantation work at the University of Miami’s Diabetes Research Institute.  The DRI team is led by Camillo Ricordi.
  • University of Virginia, Mary Laughlin (2012)

  • We supported immune modulation therapy research. This project is directed by Mary Laughlin.
  • Harvard University, Doug Melton (2013)

  • We supported beta cell regeneration work at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. The HSCI team is led by Doug Melton.
  • Columbia University, Megan Sykes (2013-2014)

  • We supported Dr. Sykes large animal feasibility study that aims to develop a protocol for achieving organ transplant (islet transplant) acceptance without the use of immunosuppressants.
